This has been a horrible year, but now it’s over. President Cheeto’s reign of terror will begin shortly.
It isn’t even just politics that sucked so bad in 2016, although the election’s results were pretty dismal, weren’t they? Between gerrymandering ruling out so many democratic candidates and the electoral college blowing away all our dreams of having a qualified president, we progressives took quite the hit. It wasn’t pretty, but something tells me that’s a cakewalk compared to what we have waiting for us come Trump’s inauguration.
So many other shitty things happened, though. Let’s not forget the various environmental disasters (just ask Flint, Michican or Oklahoma). Nor should we forget all the celebrity deaths: Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Muhammad Ali, Anton Yelchin, and Prince–just to name a very few. Yeah. This was a lousy year. A lot of people died, including astronomer Vera Rubin, astronaut Piers Sellers, biomedical scientist Susan Lindquist, and climate scientist Gordon Hamilton. Our world just lost some very smart people, even as our nation proves time and time again that fake information is on the rise. These are dark times.
I know that we’re supposed to feel optimistic when one year ends and another begins. There’s something enticing in the idea of new beginnings, that things are going to change. Well, guess what? Things are going to change. And God help us all.
